Our dog, Tango, relaxing on our bed. |
After spending the majority of my first month back in Baton Rouge in front of a television or looking up at the ceiling, I decided to climb out of rut a few days ago. I decided to motivate myself.
The weeks prior were a blur. I generally emerged from my bat cave around, played the Xbox through the late afternoon until my unsuspecting wife came home and did it all over again the next day. A cup of tea or a drink of water here or there was enough to fuel my being.
Now I jog around, read, write and enjoy more of the day. I even eat three full meals a day.
Yes, To Pimp a Butterfly is a game-changer but the highlight of my week has been binge watching -- with Bria by my side of course -- the 1980’s sitcom A Different World, which was released on Netflix this past weekend. Sure, I’d seen clips in passing but never quite sat down and indulged in all of its awesomeness. The show centered around the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional HBCU, brought back the fondest memories of my college years at LSU, (not that long ago) and made me consider the possibly attending an HBCU for a master’s program. But, returning to school is a ways off.
In closing sometimes we have to pick ourselves up. Motivation won’t always come from outside forces. A parent or friend may attempt to kindle the fire but it’s on you to nurture it. Sometimes you have to ignite and nurture your own fire. Get up. Get active.
Love and peace.
Kendrick on repeat.
